Preferred Hotels is an interesting collection of independent hotels loosely tied together under the brand, and I Prefer guest loyalty program.

I wish that I Prefer points would be more valuable than they are.

This could be an exciting offer and worth having a look at on Monday.

I have only once stayed at a Preferred Hotel, and the stay took place in Marrakesh. Three hotels in Helsinki switched to Preferred Hotels from Design Hotels and SLH (Klaus K, Haven & Lilla Roberts), and I wouldn’t mind revisiting them.

I Prefer Awards:

Preferred Hotels claims to have 650 or so independent hotels associated with it. Only 114 of those, however, are available using points.

Number of Points Required:

  • 15,000 points = 13 hotels
  • 30,000 points = 36 hotels
  • 50,000 points = 32 hotels
  • 75,000 points = 15 hotels
  • 100,000 points = 12 hotels
  • 150,000 points = 6 hotels

Conclusion

The page states that these 27,000 points are enough for a free night, but the last time I checked, each iPrefer point is worth 0.2 US cents. So the value of 27,000  I Prefer points should be $54, which is hardly enough for a free night. UPDATE: You can redeem points at a fixed value at roughly 114 hotels.

I tried to find out how much these Preferred Hotels require in terms of points but couldn’t find any values on their website. They use an outside company for bookings, and perhaps they cannot pull them.

A friend of mine participated in their recent 30,000 bonus points offer and had to “fight” to have them posted because Preferred Hotels claimed that the reservation was not booked on their website (it was).

Preferred’s I Prefer guest loyalty program is about the worst in the business, giving members, on average, a free night for every 50 nights consumed (yes – you read it right).

Some Preferred Affiliated hotels may be part of other soft brands and have other loyalty affiliations.

It is unclear if Virgin Hotels plan to launch a proper hotel loyalty program on their own and associate with Virgin wide Virgin Red. However, they currently have “The Know” that allows those who book directly to score potential upgrades and other benefits.

Conclusion

Preferred Hotels must be able to provide distribution and other help for independent hoteliers or small chains because I Prefer certainly won’t draw bookings from consumers.

I recently had a chat with one GM whose property was part of Preferred and was not happy with the additional exposure it provided, essentially none.

Not sure why you can only redeem iPrefer points at less than 10% of Preferred Hotels properties? The list of participating hotels for their Cyber Monday offer is greater than those where you can redeem points.

This offer may sound great, and I could have a stay of two nights at Klaus K in Helsinki this December to earn the bonus, but the limited options to burn the points is a no-go for me.

Here are the terms and conditions of this offer:

There is no stay date requirement (can be far out) and the points will be deposited to member’s account in April. 50,000 I Prefer points are worth $100 certificate.

Conclusion

The problem I have with I Prefer is that the number of points that you earn are essentially just 2% rebate of your stay. Why even bother at this ridiculously low level to have a program at all? You need to spend $5,000 to get $100 voucher. I would assume that most member points just expire unused.

This 50,000 points offer can make sense for those that have been planning to stay at one of their hotels and could earn this one time bonus easily. Won’t sway my stay preferences, however.

If you are planning to stay at any of their 600 or so properties and the pricing on Preferred Hotel Group’s website is competitive, it may make sense to take advantage of this promotion.

I had a post about this iPrefer program when it was launched, but decided not to cover their on-going promotions due to very meager base earnings of just 2%. You would need to have 50 nights to have one free night at similarly priced property without any promotions.

Conclusion

This is a good way to redeem Choice Privileges points for higher quality hotels compared to Choice’s own line up, but obviously it comes at a higher point cost.

There is no need to sign up for this offers, but you need to make the booking on iPrefer.com and have your membership number on the reservation. You can access iPrefer offers here, but this offer is not listed there. 

I wrote about iPrefer’s new points based program on August (you can access the article here). Remember that iPrefer program is likely the LEAST rewarding points based program out there. You receive only 2% of the room revenue back in certificates that you can use towards hotel bookings. Essentially, you can consider this program as a 1 free night for every 50 nights consumer.

Conclusion

If you are going to stay at Preferred Hotel Group property by February 28, 2014, and collect iPrefer points, now it would be the time to do the booking.

You would, however, get much greater benefit in terms of cash back just booking these hotels through various OTA’s instead of directly with Preferred Hotel Group.

The website has already been updated with the new info about the program, its status levels and awards. Overall, I am not impressed with the program at all. You can access iPrefer’s website here.

Basically, you will receive ONE point per USD spend that it worth 2 cents when used towards hotel certificates. You will receive complimentary internet for just being a program member (Silver) and space available early check-in and late check-out.

When you have spend more than $5,000, you will then be upgraded to a Gold level. The main benefits is the welcome amenity (confirmed) and room upgrade (based on availability.

Those that use more than $15,000 at Preferred Group Hotels will get Platinum tier. The main additional benefit at this level is 10% bonus on earned points.

Note that neither room upgrades nor early/late check-ins/outs are guaranteed at any level.

Reward Certificates

You can redeem your earned points for reward certificates that you can use as cash at iPrefer program hotels. The redemption options starts at 2,500 points (requires $2,500 spend) for $50 voucher.

Rewarding program?

This is about the least rewarding hotel loyalty program that I have seen. You need to have 50 nights to get 1 free night if at the same price hotel considering that you only receive ONE point per USD spend that is then worth just TWO cents.

Note that not all Preferred Hotel Group’s hotels are participating to iPrefer. You can get list of participating hotels here.

Conclusion

If you are planning to stay at the Preferred Group hotels, you should make the booking using one of the OTA’s (Online Travel Agent) and get cashback (always greater than 2%) via one of the online shopping portals (Ebates, MrRebates, TopCashback and many more), use OTA coupons (I have list many here) and maybe participate to OTA specific loyalty program.

I really would like to have something positive to say about this program, but getting just 2% of your hotel spend back in vouchers is just ridiculous and not worth bothering (at least not in my case).

So, you will essentially get 2% cashback in forms of rewards vouchers for the stays that you book directly with the Preferred Hotels Group and have your iPrefer number on file. The chain expects around 85% of their properties to participate to this program.

I think that it is good that they are introducing something, but 2% benefit is certainly not enough, when OTA’s (Online Travel Agents) are offering 6% to 15% cashback, 10% to 25% off coupons, and some even have their own in-house rewards programs like Hotels.com Welcome Rewards’ free night for every 10 nights.

Conclusion

Let’s hope that iPrefer would spice up the program and offer some more generous benefits besides 2% back in form of hotel vouchers.
