Aegean, a Greek Star Alliance member airline, celebrated the 20th anniversary of its Miles+Bonus frequent flier program in December (read more here).
Part of the celebration was to give a random number of miles from 1,000 to 2,000,000 to all who decided to participate.
You can access Aegean here.
Aegean shared some statistics of its giveaway that are quite eye-shattering:
- 150.000+ members took part in the activation
- 500.000.000+ miles were gifted to our members in total
- 2 lucky members earned 2,000,000 miles each
- 2 lucky members earned 1,000,000 miles each
Conclusion
Most members who only received a few thousand miles will likely only have those sitting on their accounts, never to be redeemed.
Few without any prior activity and registered received significant amounts of miles that can be used for regional business class flights or long-haul in the economy.
I am still not convinced that this was the most reasonable way of randomly distributing an excess of half a billion miles to Miles+Bonus members when many, if not most, of the most “valued” got hardly anything.
