IHG One Rewards members must choose between two offers: earn 2,000 bonus points for every two nights (1,000 bonus points per night) OR 10,000 bonus points […]]]> IHG has now released its “You Choose” summer promotion for stays consumed between June 6 – August 31, 2023.

IHG One Rewards members must choose between two offers: earn 2,000 bonus points for every two nights (1,000 bonus points per night) OR 10,000 bonus points for every four nights (2,500 bonus points per night).

You can access this offer on IHG’s website here.

Note that once you make the selection between these two offers, it cannot be reversed.

You should always choose the option of 10,000 bonus points for every four nights if you plan to stay more than four nights during the promotional period.

Conclusion

You should choose the 10K bonus option in most cases unless you know for sure that you will only stay two or three nights during the promotional period.

There have often been bonuses for cobranded cardholders from Chase, but it is unclear now if that is the case with this offer.

Here are the terms and conditions of this offer:

This promotional offer (the “Promotion”) gives IHG One Rewards members the opportunity to choose one of two different options for earning extra IHG One Rewards bonus points. If not already an IHG One Rewards member, an individual can enrol in the IHG One Reward programme, at no cost, at Join IHG One Rewards. To participate in the Promotion, a member must first register their member number for one of two available offers: (1) the “Earn 2,000 points every 2 nights” offer (the “2,000 Points Offer”); or (2) the “Earn 10,000 points every 4 nights” offer (the “10,000 Points Offer”). If a member has registered for the 2,000 Points Offer, the member can earn 2,000 IHG One Rewards bonus points each time they complete two (2) Qualifying Room Nights during the Promotion Period. If a member registered for the 10,000 Points Offer, the member can earn 10,000 IHG One Rewards bonus points each time they complete four (4) Qualifying Room Nights during the Promotion Period. A member can only register for one of these two Offers, and once a member has registered for one of them, the member is only eligible for that Offer and cannot register for the other Offer or receive any points under the other Offer. The “Promotion Period” is from 24 May 2023 through 31 August 2023. Members registered for either the 2,000 Points Offer or the 10,000 Points Offer can earn bonus points under this Promotion throughout the Promotion Period. Members will be able to register for this Promotion starting on 24 May 2023. By clicking the “click to register” button for the Promotion, a member is registering for either the 2,000 Points Offer or the 10,000 Points Offer (based on the one they have chosen) and is accepting these Terms and Conditions.

To be a “Qualifying Room Night” under the Promotion, the room night must fall within the Promotion Period and must be part of a Promotion Eligible Qualifying Stay. As stated, the “Promotion Period” is from 24 May 2023 through 31 August 2023. Room nights outside of the Promotion Period are not included, and room nights that are part of a stay that was completed prior to registration for the Promotion also are not included. For the purposes of this Promotion, “Promotion Eligible Qualifying Stay” is defined as a minimum 1-night stay at a participating hotel booked under a Qualifying Rate, with a total spend exceeding $30 USD (or local equivalent) for each night. Participating hotels include all IHG® Hotels & Resorts and Mr and Mrs Smith properties, with the exception of those Six Senses® Hotels, Resorts & Spas that do not participate in IHG One Rewards. Iberostar Beachfront Resorts that are not yet fully integrated into the IHG One Rewards program also do not participate in this Promotion. Stays booked using Rewards Nights or Points & Cash are not Promotion Eligible Qualifying Stays for purposes of this Promotion. Bookings made through on-line travel agencies or other reservation sites such as booking.com or expedia.com also do not qualify under this Promotion. (For additional details on Qualifying Rates, please see the IHG One Rewards Membership Terms and Conditions.) If more than one member who registered for the Promotion checks into the same room, only one member is eligible to earn points under the Promotion for those nights that qualify. If a member books more than one room on the same night, the member will receive credit towards this Promotion for only one of the rooms that also meets the requirements of a Qualifying Room Night.

A member’s participation in the IHG One Rewards program and this Promotion is subject to the standard IHG One Rewards Membership Terms and Conditions, which can be obtained here or by visiting ihgonerewards.com. The bonus points awarded through this Promotion are not Elite status qualifying under the IHG One Rewards programme. The time needed for awarding points can vary with each promotion, so please allow up to 6 weeks for the bonus points to be posted to the recipient’s member account. IHG One Rewards benefits are generally available at all IHG® Hotels & Resorts and other partner hotels participating in the program, with exceptions for the following brands: IHG One Rewards benefits are generally available at all IHG® hotels and resorts and other partner hotels participating in the programme, with the exception of the following brands:

Frequently asked questions by IHG:

YOU CHOOSE (All IHG One Rewards members, globally)

What is the You Choose Promotion?

    • IHG One Rewards members are being offered two options for a way to earn additional bonus points when they stay at participating IHG® Hotels & Resorts during the Promotion Period. The two options are referred to as “Offers” and are described in more detail below.
    • To participate in the Promotion, a member must first choose one of the two Offers and then register for the Offer they have chosen. A member can only register for one of the two Offers, and once a member has registered for one of them, the member is only eligible for that Offer and cannot register for the other Offer or receive any points under the other Offer.
    • The two Offers are:

Option 1 − The “Earn 2,000 Points Every 2 Nights” Offer (“2,000 Points Offer”).

If a member has registered for the 2,000 Points Offer, the member can earn 2,000 bonus points each time they complete two (2) Qualifying Room Nights stayed during the Promotion Period.

OR

Option 2 − The “Earn 10,000 Points Every 4 Nights” Offer (“10,000 Points Offer”)

If a member has registered for the 10,000 Points Offer, the member can earn 10,000 bonus points each time they complete four (4) Qualifying Room Nights stayed during the Promotion Period.

How do I know if I am eligible for the You Choose Promotion?

    • This Promotion is available to all IHG One Rewards members.
  • When does the You Choose Promotion begin and end?
    • The Pre-Registration Period for IHG One Rewards members begins on 24 May 2023 and ends on 5 June 2023. Members can pre-register for this Promotion during this Pre-Registration Period.
    • Members can earn points based on Qualifying Room Nights at participating IHG® Hotels & Resorts and participating affiliated hotels, globally, during the Promotion Period, which is from 6 June 2023 through 31 August 2023. The Promotion Period is when members can stay and earn promotional bonus points under this Promotion. As explained in more detail in these FAQs, the number of points a member can earn, and the number of Qualifying Room Nights required to earn those points, will depend on which of the two Offers the member chooses when they first register for the Promotion.
    • Members who did not pre-register can also register for the Promotion during the Promotion Period. Nights stayed prior to registration for the You Choose Promotion, and nights stayed before or after the Promotion Period, will not be eligible for bonus points under the Promotion.

If I registered for the previous 2,000 Points Every 2 Nights promotion, which ran from 25 January 2023 through 14 April 2023, do I still need to register for the You Choose Promotion?

    • Yes, these are separate promotions and require separate registration for members to be eligible to earn bonus points under the You Choose Promotion.

Can a member register for both the 2,000 Points Offer and the 10,000 Points Offer within the You Choose Promotion?

    • A member will not be able to register for both Offers within the You Choose Promotion. Upon registering for one of the two Offers, they will become ineligible to register for the other.

Example − If a member registers for the “Earn 2,000 Points Every 2 Nights” Offer (“2,000 Points Offer”), the member can only earn points under that Offer, and the member cannot register for the “Earn 10,000 Points Every 4 Nights” Offer (“10,000 Points Offer”) and cannot receive any points under the 10,000 Points Offer.

How can members earn bonus points with this Promotion?

    • Members will need to first choose between the Earn 2,000 Points Every 2 Nights” Offer (“2,000 Points Offer”) and the “Earn 10,000 Points Every 4 Nights” Offer (“10,000 Points Offer”) and then register for the Offer they have chosen.
      • If a member registers for the 2,000 Points Offer, the member will receive 2,000 promotional bonus points each time they complete two (2) Qualifying Room Nights at participating IHG® Hotels & Resorts or a participating affiliated hotel, globally, during the Promotion Period.
      • If a member registers for the 10,000 Points Offer, the member will receive 10,000 promotional bonus points each time they complete four (4) Qualifying Room Nights at participating IHG® Hotels & Resorts or a participating affiliated hotel, globally, during the Promotion Period.

Can points be earned at any IHG® Hotels and Resorts property, globally, through the You Choose Promotion?

    • Hotels participating in the You Choose Promotion include all IHG® Hotels & Resorts and Mr and Mrs Smith hotels, with the exception of those Six Senses® Hotels, Resorts & Spas that do not participate in IHG One Rewards. In addition, Iberostar Beachfront Resorts that are not yet fully integrated into the IHG One Rewards programme also do not participate in this Promotion.
    • IHG One Rewards benefits are generally available at all IHG® Hotels & Resorts and other partner hotels participating in the IHG One Rewards programme, with exceptions for the following brands:
      • Six Senses® Hotels, Resorts & Spas & Mr & Mrs Smith Hotels: IHG One Rewards points may be earned or redeemed for stays but other benefits may not be available. Note some hotels do not participate in IHG One Rewards.
      • Iberostar Beachfront Resorts: Will be integrated into IHG One Rewards at a future date.
    • See the IHG One Rewards Membership Terms and Conditions for details on programme benefits and restrictions.

What is a “Qualifying Room Night” for purposes of the You Choose Promotion?

    • To be a “Qualifying Room Night” under the Promotion, the room night must fall within the Promotion Period and must be part of a Promotion Eligible Qualifying Stay. As noted above, the “Promotion Period” is from 24 May 2023 through 31 August 2023.
    • Room nights outside of the Promotion Period are not included, and room nights that are part of a stay that was completed prior to registration for the Promotion also are not included.

What is a “Promotion Eligible Qualifying Stay” for purposes of the You Choose Promotion?

    • A Promotion Eligible Qualifying Stay is a minimum one (1) night stay at a participating hotel booked under a Qualifying Rate, with a total spend exceeding US $30 (or local currency equivalent) for each night.
    • Stays booked using Reward Nights or Points & Cash are not Promotion Eligible Qualifying Stays for purposes of this Promotion. Bookings made through online travel agencies or other reservation sites such as booking.com or expedia.com also do not qualify under this Promotion.
    • If more than one member checks into the same room, only one member is eligible to receive credit for the room night under the Promotion for those nights that qualify.
    • If a member books more than one room on the same night, the member will receive credit towards this Promotion for only one of the rooms that also meets the requirements of a Qualifying Room Night.

What is considered a Qualifying Rate?

    • Qualifying Rates include most business and leisure rates, such as Advanced Purchase rates, Best Flexible rates, Global sales negotiated rates (including but not limited to Corporate Gold rates), national/regional/local government rates and specified leisure rates as confirmed by IHG’s reservation systems. In Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Greater China hotels and resorts, Qualifying Rates include all locally negotiated rates.
    • For more details on Qualifying Rates, please visit the IHG One Rewards Members Terms and Conditions.

How many bonus points can I expect to earn when participating in the You Choose Promotion?

    • For this Promotion, the “Earn 2,000 Points Every 2 Nights” Offer means that a member registering for this Offer will receive an additional 2,000 bonus points each time the member completes two (2) Qualifying Room Nights stayed at participating IHG® Hotels & Resorts or a participating affiliated hotel, globally, during the Promotion Period. These points are in addition to the base points the member will receive from their qualifying stay.
    • For this Promotion, the “Earn 10,000 Points Every 4 Nights” Offer means a member registering for this Offer will receive an additional 10,000 bonus points each time they complete four (4) Qualifying Room Nights stayed at participating IHG® Hotels & Resorts or a participating affiliated hotel, globally, during the Promotion Period. These points are in addition to the base points the member will receive from their qualifying stay.
    • Members registered for the You Choose Promotion can earn bonus points under the Promotion throughout the Promotion Period.
    • Additional information on “Qualifying Room Nights” is available in these FAQs and the Promotion terms and conditions, which are available here.

How are bonus points calculated under the You Choose Promotion for Elite members?

    • As explained in more detail in these FAQs, the number of points a member can earn under this Promotion, and the number of Qualifying Room Nights required to earn those points, will depend on which of the two Offers the member chooses when they first register for the Promotion. The promotional bonus points are then calculated based solely on the number of Qualifying Room Nights the member stays at participating IHG® Hotels & Resorts or participating affiliated hotels (globally), as an IHG One Rewards member, during the Promotion Period. Any Elite status bonus points or any other bonus or promotional points the member may be eligible to receive for the same stay are not included in that calculation. Additional examples of the award of points under the You Choose Promotion for members with Elite status are provided below.

Example One – A Diamond Elite member completes two Qualifying Room Nights at a participating IHG® Hotels & Resorts property and is registered for the “Earn 2,000 Points Every 2 Nights” Offer under the You Choose Promotion. The member spends $100.00 on each night. The member will earn a total of 6,000 IHG One Rewards Points, as follows:

  • Base Points Earned (Points the member receives for their stay for being an IHG One Rewards member): 10 Points per USD X $100 X 2 Nights = 2,000 Base Points.
    • Elite Bonus Points Earned (Bonus points the member receives for their stay for being a Diamond Elite Status Member): 10 Bonus Points per USD X $100 X 2 Nights = 2,000 Elite Bonus Points.
    • Promotional Bonus Points Earned under the YOU CHOOSE Promotion (Bonus Points the member receives for their stay for participating in this Promotion): The 2 Qualifying Room Nights result in “2,000 promotional bonus points” under the YOU CHOOSE Promotion.
    • The total points earned by the member under this example is: 2,000 Base Points + 2,000 Elite Bonus Points + 2,000 Promotional Bonus Points = 6,000 total points.

Example Two – A Diamond Elite member completes 4 Qualifying Room Nights at a participating IHG® Hotels & Resorts property and is registered for the “Earn 10,000 Points Every 4 Nights” Offer under the You Choose Promotion. The member spends $100 per night. The member will earn a total of 18,000 IHG One Rewards Points, as follows:

  • Base Points Earned (Points the member receives for their stay for being an IHG One Rewards Member): 10 Points per USD X $100 X 4 Nights = 4,000 Base Points.
    • Elite Status Bonus Points Earned (Bonus points the member receives for their stay for being a Diamond Elite Member): 10 Bonus Points per USD X $100 X 4 Nights = 4,000 Elite Bonus Points.
    • Promotional Bonus Points Earned under the You Choose Promotion (Bonus points the member receives for their stay for participating in this Promotion): The 4 Qualifying Room Nights result in “10,000 promotional bonus points” under the Pick Your Payoff Promotion.
    • The total points earned by the member under this example is: 4,000 Base Points + 4,000 Elite Bonus Points + 10,000 Promotional Bonus Points = 18,000 total points.

Is there a maximum number of bonus points a member can earn under this Promotion during the Promotion Period?

    • There is not a maximum number of points specified for the You Choose Promotion. Once a member registers for the Promotion, the member can accumulate as many Qualifying Room Nights as possible during the Promotion Period (after they have registered) and earn bonus points under the Promotion for those nights based on the Offer they have chosen.

Where can members register for the You Choose Promotion?

    • It’s simple! Click THIS LINK to learn more about the You Choose Promotion, choose one of the Offers, and start earning bonus points for Qualifying Room Nights at participating IHG® Hotels & Resorts and participating affiliated hotels, globally, throughout the Promotion Period.

Aweber decided, don’t ask us why, move away from the tried and tested feature on Friday, and launch something new that doesn’t work.

We were able to resurrect the old feature, at least for now, and the Friday emails went out on Saturday, and we are returning to our usual email schedule today.

Conclusion

To be frank, and I don’t usually mince my words, this provider put out half-baked, poorly designed, and untested crap while disabling the working feature we had been using for a long time.

But haven’t we all been through this with various apps and websites that companies launch while disabling the previous ones that have been working? Upgrades and updates usually mean less functionality, more clicks, and time wasted that companies sell us as an “enhancement.”

And why nobody tests these features before launch? Companies are using their paying customers as beta testers.

But luckily, we do have a choice between providers and have been contemplating something else for quite some time, and this was the last thing to push us over. So stay tuned for our daily email update in the next month or so.

Is Hilton Honors The Worst Of The Big Four Loyalty Programs When It Comes To Benefits? https://loyaltylobby.com/2023/05/21/is-hilton-honors-the-worst-of-the-big-four-loyalty-programs-when-it-comes-to-benefits/?omhide=true https://loyaltylobby.com/2023/05/21/is-hilton-honors-the-worst-of-the-big-four-loyalty-programs-when-it-comes-to-benefits/#disqus_thread Sun, 21 May 2023 05:16:02 +0000 https://loyaltylobby.com/?p=173329 It’s our core mission here on Loyalty Lobby to keep the programs honest, so I’m always surprised how certain “loyalty” schemes turn out so horrible in a certain niche compared to competitors, in this case, Hilton Honors. Hilton offers the least guaranteed benefits of the major hotel loyalty programs and I start to wonder why people continue to put up with that.

We always have to remember that by staying at these branded hotels, we usually pay a premium over other options that would be readily available but aren’t associated with a big brand.

When comparing all the programs of the big chains there are certain standard benefits that you always get when reaching a mid or especially a top-tier level, one of them is a guaranteed late checkout yet Hilton has still not found it to be necessary to update the Hilton Honors program with that benefit.

While Hilton offers an unspecified late checkout in the benefit list, it doesn’t prescribe a specific timeframe, and it’s also “upon availability” only.

We have previously covered this topic here on LoyaltyLobby as well:

Does Hilton Honors Offer Late Check Out Benefit For Elite Members?

There is also a lackluster approach when it comes to room upgrades, even though Hilton finally reacted some time ago and added suites to be eligible for Diamond members to be upgraded to.

Reader Question: What To Book As Hilton Diamond To Get Suite Upgrades?

But the late checkout is really my biggest beef with Hilton Honors, and for some reason, it’s always Japan that presents a problem here, most recently at the Hilton properties in Osaka, Narita, and just yesterday at the Hilton Tokyo.

Let’s have a look at the benefits the program offers once again:

Late check is not mentioned on any Honors tier level of this chart as a benefit.

Late Check-Out is mentioned on the FAQs:

Can I get a late check-out?

Policies vary by location. Visit the hotel’s website to find out whether late check-out is available and if fees apply.

And also briefly in the Hilton Honors terms and conditions:

Late Check-Out: Must be requested and is subject to availability.

It is also listed as member benefit on the Mobile App:

Hilton basically guarantees, your guessed it right, nothing in terms of the late checkout option.

I consider the Big Four chains of hotels as

  • Hyatt
  • Hilton
  • IHG
  • Marriott

These chains (and others) usually have an elite-specific structure, such as:

  • Diamond (Top Tier) member = 4 PM
  • Gold (Mid Tier) member = 3 PM
  • Silver (Low Tier) member = 2 PM

Hyatt & Marriott guarantees these late checkouts, IHG guarantees it to 4 PM for Ambassador Members at IC properties but only offers up to 2 PM for Diamond Elites and “upon availability” at other properties. Hilton doesn’t give any timeframe, and it’s “upon availability” only. No guarantees, no matter what tier.

I was once again reminded of that when I checked in at the Hilton Tokyo for one night, and not only didn’t they have a “real” upgrade (an Executive Room is basically the same room with Club Access, that’s NOT an upgrade for a Diamond) but they also didn’t offer a late check-out. Then when I pushed for it, they offered 1 PM.

At that point, I was already ready to walk and reserve the Hyatt Regency next door, which I wanted to avoid this time. The front desk manager eventually agreed to a 2:30 PM checkout time, and he also “found” a Junior Suite to upgrade to. Not sure why this was so difficult, how many people check in at this hotel on a Sunday? Not many, and there are A LOT of rooms available for today to book.

It’s simply a matter of policy and willingness set by the management of these Hilton Hotels, and the problem is that Hilton Honors doesn’t deem it necessary to be competitive with the other companies to offer a firm time for their Elites as Late Checkout time. No matter if this time would be 2 PM, 3 PM, or 4 PM.

I like Hilton Honors for the promotions throughout the year and the accessibility of the Diamond Desk via email, but the benefits are really lacking.

Conclusion

Usually, it’s no problem to request a late checkout at Hotels, even many Hilton properties readily agree to offer Elite members to stay longer in their rooms, but they have been difficult in Japan lately (well, forever really), and it’s starting to bug me. I didn’t have many problems with Conrad hotels in Japan, but Hiltons are a real pain to deal with.

Why doesn’t Hilton Honors finally implement a firm late checkout benefit for their Gold and Diamond members? Of course, Hilton has decided to basically make the Diamond tier level available for anyone in the U.S. who wants to apply and pay $450 for a credit card. Gold has always been extremely easy to obtain as well, either through fast tracks or credit card benefits.

The bottom line is that Hilton Honors is not competitive with its peer programs when it comes to such a hard benefit. I didn’t like when they discontinued the “Diamond Force / Guarantee” for award stays which was a perk I often used. And when you have a stay where late checkout is vital, Hilton simply can’t be counted on.

These chain hotels all charge a premium for being brand associated, without hard benefits for being top-tier elite I’d rather reconsider spending a lot of money with that chain, and this particular issue is one reason why I have always extended my Hyatt Diamond / Globalist because if push comes to shove, that’s the strongest status to come through for you.

Accor ALL members can earn up to 25,000 bonus points (worth 500 euros) for five stays (staggered bonus) booked AFTER registering for this offer. There is a minimum stay requirement of two nights.

You can access this offer on Accor’s website here and access Fairmont here.

  • Stay 4: 7,000 bonus points (15,000 cumulative bonus)
  • Stay 5: 10,000 bonus points (25,000 cumulative bonus)

Conclusion

These are rather pricey Fairmont properties, and you would likely be better of if there is an offer for double/triple points, as there often is.

Terms and conditions of this offer:

1. General ALL – Accor Live Limitless terms and conditions apply to the Adventure Awaits Boost points offer and you must be ALL member to benefit from it.

2. This offer entitles ALL members, regardless of their Membership status, to earn up to 25,000 Reward points by booking and staying at five of the eight participating hotels during the offer period, with a minimum stay of 2 nights required. The Bonus points will be awarded in an escalating structure:

• Stay 3 – 5,000 points
• Stay 4 – 7,000 points
• Stay 5 – 10,000 points

The bonus Reward points are offered in addition to the standard Reward points that would be earned by the ALL member for each eligible stay done in application to the ALL General Conditions of Use. This promotion is not applicable for hotel partners of ALL.

3. This offer is valid for a member’s bookings and stays from 05/17/2023 to 12/31/2023 at Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn, Fairmont San Francisco, Claremont Club & Spa – A Fairmont Hotel, Fairmont Grand Del Mar, Fairmont Century Plaza, Fairmont Miramar, Fairmont Orchid and Fairmont Kea Lani.

4. The stay must be a minimum of 2 night(s).

6. For the purpose of this offer, a stay is one (1) reservation made by an ALL member for one or more rooms in a participating hotel. For the avoidance of doubt, a reservation made for more than one room will therefore be considered as only one (1) stay.

7. To benefit from this offer, your booking must be made through an eligible channel.

8. You must provide your ALL Loyalty card number when making your reservation, and present your card at the hotel reception desk when you check-in for your stay.

10. This offer cannot be combined with other current promotional offers or advantages and does not apply to groups.

If the stay meets the terms and conditions for several offers, only the Reward points linked to the most generous offer (meaning that allows you to earn the highest number of Reward points) will be credited to your account.

11. Any stay partly or entirely paid with ALL Reward points or with one or more vouchers will not be eligible to receive this offer. Stays entirely or partly paid for with ALL Reward points, or with one or more vouchers will not count towards offers that require multiple stays for points earn.

12. This offer is subject to availability. General sales terms and conditions apply for reserved public rates specific to each hotel.

13. Members must book the Adventure Awaits Boost points offer to benefit from the promotional, escalating Bonus Reward points. Save 15% compared to the fully flexible rate by booking promotional rate with deposit. Hertz Calls Cops On Customer From Puerto Rico Because He Couldn’t Provide A Passport For The Rental https://loyaltylobby.com/2023/05/20/hertz-calls-cops-on-customer-from-puerto-rico-because-he-couldnt-provide-a-passport-for-the-rental/?omhide=true https://loyaltylobby.com/2023/05/20/hertz-calls-cops-on-customer-from-puerto-rico-because-he-couldnt-provide-a-passport-for-the-rental/#disqus_thread Sat, 20 May 2023 08:13:42 +0000 https://loyaltylobby.com/?p=173314 Hertz is at it again, calling law enforcement on customers for no reason, this time, a Hertz employee refused a Puerto Rican customer a rental, wrongly claiming he needed a passport. After a dispute and explanation that Puerto Rico is (unincorporated) U.S. territory, the Hertz […]]]> Hertz is at it again, calling law enforcement on customers for no reason, this time, a Hertz employee refused a Puerto Rican customer a rental, wrongly claiming he needed a passport.

After a dispute and explanation that Puerto Rico is (unincorporated) U.S. territory, the Hertz employee called the police, and things quickly went downhill from there.

One would think that Hertz would have learned its lesson after paying out millions in settlements to customers who were wrongfully reported to the police as car thieves, many of who spent considerable time in jail until things were cleared up.

This local employee didn’t get the memo and will most likely cost the company another chunk of money in compensation and reputational damage.

It all broke when the customer posted a video and account of what happened on his Twitter:

Not enough with Hertz refusing the customer his prepaid rental and going completely nuts, the police was called and apparently, the officer at the scene wasn’t exactly the brightests bulbs in the chandelier either:

A police officer threatens a U.S. citizen who is in possession of a REAL ID by calling CBP/ICE to settle a business dispute?

I get (not that I accept it) that Hertz has ‘some’ bozos working for them, I doubt their hiring requirements are very high, and that geography, civics, or political science played a major role in their employees curriculum, but a police officer should be trained better and know the basics.

CNN reported that following the Tweet, which went viral, Hertz acknowledged the error and issued a public statement:

Hertz has apologized to a Puerto Rican customer after one of its employees refused to rent him a car he had paid for in advance because he did not show her his passport.

Humberto Marchand said that he traveled to New Orleans last Wednesday and presented his Puerto Rican driver’s license at the Hertz counter at the Louie Armstrong International Airport. The employee asked for his passport even though, like all Puerto Ricans, Marchand is a US citizen and does not need to have a passport to rent a car within the United States.

Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States, and anyone born on the island is by law a US citizen.

“I was surprised and definitely frustrated because it was very late at night, so I decided to make a formal complaint” said Marchand in an interview with CNN.

In a statement to CNN, Hertz (HTZ) said that the company accepts Puerto Rican driver’s licenses from customers renting in the United States without requiring a valid passport.

“We sincerely regret that our policy was not followed and have apologized to Mr. Marchand and refunded his rental,” a company spokesperson said. “We are reinforcing our policies with employees to ensure that they are understood and followed consistently across our locations.”

Marchand says a Kenner Police Department officer responded to the scene and also asked him to leave. As he walked away, he said he heard the police officer threaten to call the border patrol.

A spokesperson for the Kenner Police Department told CNN that they have reviewed the officer’s body cam footage and that nowhere in the video did the officer mention the border patrol, ICE or any other immigration authorities.

“There is the specific portion on the footage where the officer says something, not related to any of those things mentioned earlier, and clearly Mr. Marchand misunderstands the officer,” Capt. Michael Cunningham told CNN.

Cunningham also said that the police department will release a statement about this incident and the body camera footage but did not specify when it will be released.

“I became very nervous because once you call the police you don’t want the matter to escalate to the point that the officer thinks he has to use some sort of force. So, I kept a very calm and assertive, but respectful, posture,” said Marchand.

It is not clear if Hertz took any disciplinary action against the employee, however, the company said that this employee, like all their employees, has been reminded of their longstanding policy related to Puerto Rican driver’s licenses.

Marchand said he also plans to file a complaint against the Kenner Police Department to ensure that their officers are trained to validate Real IDs and to review any inappropriate comments about being referred to border authorities that he claims were made by the officer.

Refunding the rental which the customer didn’t utilize isn’t an acceptable form of compensation. It’s not even an apology and should this be the only action taken it’s absolutely ridiculous and the customer should explore his legal options with the help of an attorney.

Why is it always Hertz that’s in the news with these sorts of things? What in the world is going on with their employees, hiring policy, and training philosophy?

The claim of the police officer threatening to call CBP has been disputed by the police department. If the customer is 100% sure that’s what the officer said then he should absolutely lodge an official complaint, gain access to the footage and consider legal action.

Conclusion

Hertz once again made headlines for all the wrong reasons, this time a station employee got into a fight with a customer demanding he presents a passport to obtain his rental car. As a U.S. citizen and Puerto Rican resident, he isn’t required to do so and this should be flagged in the Hertz system.

Why an employee would make up random rules and then even call the police is beyond me. Sometimes employees who have an overbooking situation on their hands and not enough cars that day try to go 100% by the book and hope some customers can’t fulfill the requirements so they won’t have to give them a car. Happened to me recently at (surprise) another Hertz station but of course, I had my passport handy. Still ended up with a total trashcan of a car that I immediately exchanged at the LAX airport station.

It’s not like this customer rented the first time with Hertz, he’s a member of Hertz Gold Rewards and has a rental history. This employee in question has no business being on the frontlines with customers or even in any other position with the company. Hopefully, Hertz will take appropriate action here.

I have followed the raffle closely, monitored it in real-time and might even have booked something, but nobody I know was even remotely successful in securing a complimentary ticket.

It was pretty clear from the beginning that there would be limited seats and the demand most likely outpaces availability, but when I entered the raffle waiting room and received a queue number greater than 180,000.

It was pretty clear to me that I definitely won’t be getting a ticket that day but I decided to stick around regardless to see how it plays out. In the meanwhile, I was looking at the comment section on our article:

Reminder: Free Cathay Pacific Tickets To Hong Kong Will Be Raffled Away TODAY 8:00 PM EST (U.S.) & 9:00 PM EST (Canada)

Seems like none of you were successful either, and this promotion had a rather negative effect rather than gathering positive attention.

Here are some comments from our readers:

Lady London writes:

Conditions and whether you need a code vary by country. I joined promptly at the start time. Within 10 minutes got a countdown from 5 mins through to 1 minute before being let in to book. It counted down the seconds in my last minute. Then at 40 seconds to being let in to book, suddenly I was at the back of the queue again with about 1 hour to wait. I waited. Waiting time varied and reduced and I never got nearer than about 19 mins again. I kept being pushed back to the end of the queue (over 1 hour) again. To get in early, be told you’ll be let into the booking page, watching it count down to only 40 seconds then this experience…

Either Cathay Pacific was letting “Friends and Family” of staff into the queue in priority over those already waiting, or they were prioritising status as our country instructions were we had to log in before booking. Either way, their queue management was definitely not first come first served like they said.

i researched well and it was a big time waste as only when the queue opened did they also show other conditions and a restricted period to fly. I could adapt my flying date but then this.

Cathay had a friend before this promotion and now they don’t due to the nontransparent way they ran this. Now I’ll book with other airlines first.

Doesn’t sound like Cathay Pacific won a lot of bonus points with this customer.

Mo says:

Waited in queue for 40 minutes, my turn comes up and there was no code anywhere. Only normal paid bookings. What a joke.

Definitely not a happy camper.

rp17 wasn’t successful either:

Literally, after waiting in two 40-min queues I got in but when I went to book there was no discount code anywhere. I even went all the way up to the payment confirmation page for an LAX flight (at the time the other three were noted to full) and nothing… no discount code anywhere. What a waste of time.

And lastly Dee who was also locked out although the reader got to the end where it displayed a price:

BS… never recieved the code and nothing was prompted even with being signed in. Went all the way to the end with the exception of entering my cc # so I wouldn’t be charged the 1500. Seems like no one recieved a code

In fact, I can understand their frustration very well and agree that this promotion wasn’t held in a very transparent or reconcilable fashion.

Nobody knew exactly how the final booking process was supposed to look like. I myself expected to get a discount code even in case you would get one (obviously not with a queue number of 180,000+).

Here is what was described on the promotional page:

Almost immediately it showed that tickets from Boston are gone:

Message last updated: 18:40 PST

All available tickets departing from “BOS” have been exhausted. Tickets departing LAX, JFK and SFO are still available.

In the end, only LAX was supposedly left which would have been fine but that disappeared soon after and the site switched to:

Yeah right. Probably not.

I’m convinced that this electronic live raffle with ominous queue numbers isn’t a great way to distribute promotional tickets like this. What would have been wrong with doing this behind the scenes and then emailing the lucky winners, maybe send a $50 discount code to those who didn’t win?

I have participated in similar campaigns before such as the Discover America promotions where you can buy packages of points. The Hyatt packages were always super popular and I think I was successful ONCE in 5+ yeats of trying to buy some. You constantly had to update the page and eventually the packages were either gone or you got lucky and landed at a payment site.

Conclusion

The Cathay Pacific & HK International Airport free ticket raffle didn’t make many friends as most were unsuccessful in purchasing anything. Usually you hear at least of SOMEONE who was able to get a ticket but in this case my success rate to track someone down is zero.

If you managed to get a ticket, please comment below or send me an email to share your experience.

Personally I don’t hold a particular grudge against CX because of this. After all it would have been an Economy Class ticket to Hong Kong, easily a 14 hour flight. But I don’t like when a company wastes peoples time with a badly designed promotion. They could have done better. A lot better.

There was a significant delay in rolling out the IT capability for members to use them at the IHG hotels worldwide, but IHG is indicating that the implementation is now worldwide when earlier this month it was merely the US, Canada, and Greater China.

You can access IHG’s page for Food & Beverage Rewards here.

These F&B Rewards should be usable at the following brands globally:

  • Six Senses
  • Regent
  • InterContinental
  • Vignette Collection
  • Kimpton
  • Hotel Indigo
  • Voco
  • Hualuxe
  • Crowne Plaza
  • Even
  • Holiday Inn
  • Atwell Suites

It seems that you can soon offset expenses at markets, pantries, and cupboards at the following HG’s select service brands (something new):

  • Holiday Inn Express
  • avid
  • Staybridge Suites
  • Candlewood Suites

You need to individually redeem each of your Food & Beverage awards towards charges in your folio:

You need to apply them one by one, and you can find them all in your Rewards Wallet:

Food & Beverage Rewards are always one of the options for every 10 consumed nights between 20 and 100:

Conclusion

I came across this option earlier this week when I was staying at InterContinental Park Lane in London, where this option was enabled, but I had zero F&B expenses.

You should first see if the redemption has been enabled at the hotels where you are staying and then apply them (unless you would utilize the F&B outlets anyway).

The rollout of this functionality has been a borderline disaster, with no communication from IHG to program members. Also, the redemption of these certs is not very straightforward at all.

I could already choose 20-night Milestone Rewards, a 30-night one by Monday, and 40 by early June. However, I will likely take the bonus points and the Confirmable Suite Upgrade this time instead, as using these hasn’t been as convenient as I had hoped for.

You […]]]> Aegean has launched a new discount coupon offer valid for travel between June 1 – October 31, 2023, to/from and within Greece.

Eligible accounts can use discount code THANKYOU to save 30% on economy and business class round-trip fares if booked by June 2.

You can access this offer on Aegean’s website here.

Note that the T&Cs state that this offer is only available for those that have received it from Aegean. I am not sure if it is available for all.

You need to use the promotional code THANKYOU to bring up these discounted rates.

It nicely discounts the fare that I was looking at by 30%,

Conclusion

I need to buy a couple of flights to/from Greece but may end up flying on another airline than Aegean because their prices appear to be out of whack.

Perhaps they are sending these codes to Miles+Bonus members that have searched but not purchased flights?

Terms and conditions of this offer:

The offer is valid for all direct and connecting roundtrip flights from/to Greece and within Greece, operated by AEGEAN and Olympic Air. All codeshare flights are excluded from the offer. The offer applies for bookings from 19/05/2023 until 02/06/2023, through aegeanair.com, olympicair.com and the AEGEAN app, for flights from 01/06/2023 up until 31/10/2023 and only when all the flights included in the booking are between these travel dates. The discount 30% will only be valid when the promotional code THANKYOU is entered in the “Promotional Code or Credit Voucher” field displayed in the booking form and cannot be combined with any other promocode offer. Only one promotional code can be used in each booking. The promocode can only be used once and is linked only to the recipient email of this offer. There is no limitation in the number of passengers in each booking. The value of the discount will apply only to the fare and not to the total ticket value. The promotional code is valid for transactions in Euro (€). Discount does not apply on taxes. In case of ticket cancellation, refund policy is applied depending on fare class. Ticket changes are permitted – relevant charges depend on fare. The offer is valid for both Economy and Business class. The promo ends on 02/06/2023 at 23:59 Greek time.

Sale Fares from Kuala Lumpur:

Valid Fare Classes For Enrich Bonus:

Conclusion

The fares within Malaysia to some of the close destinations are reasonable.

I checked some fares ex-Thailand, and they were not remarkable, like sometimes in the past.

It was not that long time ago when Malaysia Airlines had fantastic fares around Southeast and Noth Asia, and I flew with the airline numerous times to these destinations, but unfortunately, those times are long gone.

Perhaps this sale helps some of our readers in Malaysia book discounted fares for travel this summer and fall.
